Standards
Editorial standards
The rules our journalism follows on accuracy, sourcing, science reporting, independence, opinion, images and corrections.
Unbroken Review exists to be trusted. These standards apply to everything we publish, on our website, in our newsletter and on any platform that distributes our journalism, including Apple News. If you believe we have fallen short of them, tell us at corrections@unbrokenreview.com.
Accuracy and verification
- We report facts we can verify. Race results come from official timing and results services wherever they are available; where results are provisional or sources disagree, we say so.
- Every news, analysis and science article lists its sources at the foot of the page, with links.
- Before publication, an editor checks each factual claim (every name, time, number and quotation) against those sources and signs the article off. Nothing is published without that sign-off.
- Numbers are reported with their context: sample sizes, units, confidence intervals and whether a difference was statistically meaningful.
Sources and quotations
- We prefer primary sources: official results, original research papers, public statements and our own interviews.
- When we quote someone, the quotation is exactly what they said, and we say where it came from. Quotes gathered by other outlets are credited to those outlets.
- We do not use anonymous sources except where information is of clear public interest and cannot be obtained on the record. In those rare cases the editor must know the source’s identity, and we explain to readers why anonymity was granted.
- We never fabricate quotations, sources, scenes or data, and we do not publish composite characters.
Reporting science
Research coverage is a core part of what we do, and we hold it to specific rules:
- We read the paper, not just the press release.
- We state what kind of study it is (randomised trial, observational cohort, meta-analysis, review or lab study) and what that design can and cannot show. We do not describe associations as causes.
- We report how many people were studied, and who they were.
- Preprints and conference abstracts that have not been peer-reviewed are labelled as such.
- Where authors report conflicts of interest or industry funding relevant to the findings, we mention it.
- We do not give personal medical advice. Our journalism is for information; readers should talk to a qualified professional about their own health.
Independence and ethics
- Our journalism is not for sale. We do not accept payment, gifts, free travel or products in exchange for coverage.
- If we review or test a product, we say how we obtained it. Products we are lent are returned or donated.
- Advertising and sponsored content, if we carry them in future, will always be clearly labelled and kept separate from our journalism. Advertisers have no influence over editorial decisions.
- Our owner’s commercial interests are disclosed. Unbroken Review is published by Unbroken Protocol, a coaching and training-app business founded by our editor. We do not promote that business in our journalism; if an article ever needs to mention it, the relationship is disclosed in the article. See ownership and funding.
- Contributors must declare any personal or financial interest in the subjects they cover.
News, analysis and opinion
Every article carries a label so readers know what they are reading:
- News reports what happened.
- Analysis interprets events and evidence, with the reasoning shown.
- Explainer sets out what is known about a subject, including its limits.
- Feature is longer-form reporting and interpretation.
- Opinion is argument from a named author. It is always labelled, and it reflects the author’s view.
Images and graphics
- Photographs are used under licence, credited to the photographer and linked to their licence terms.
- Photographs of real events are real. We do not publish AI-generated or manipulated images presented as photographs of real people or events.
- Our data graphics are drawn from the published figures of the study or results cited beneath them.
Corrections
We correct errors promptly and transparently. Corrections are noted on the article itself, with the date, and listed on our corrections page.
Use of AI
Our use of artificial intelligence tools is governed by our AI policy. In short: humans are responsible for everything we publish, AI involvement in drafting is disclosed, and every article is fact-checked and signed off by an editor.
